Koba is a pre-workout supplement by Monkey Nutrition.
We weren’t sure what flavor it was – and after checking their website, they don’t say what it’s supposed to taste like either.
Taste isn’t the most important feature of a pre-workout, but it helps when a product tasted nice; unfortunately, Monkey Nutrition didn’t.
Who are Monkey Nutrition?
You can be forgiven for not knowing who Monkey Nutrition are – we only found out about this supplements company through this pre-workout.
They’re based in Chesire, UK – so international orders outside of the UK might take a while to be delivered.
Monkey Nutrition actually charge up to £28 for delivery to Europe – this is something we really didn’t like. Companies should offer free worldwide delivery to support all customers.
Koba’s Ingredients Explained
The first thing we noticed when looking at Koba’s ingredient list, was that it contains numerous proprietary blends.
What are proprietary blends?
These are mixtures of numerous ingredients that’re shown to you as one quantity – meaning you don’t know the exact amount of each ingredient inside these blends.
This is a problem – you might be sensitive to a nutrient, which will cause you side effects (especially caffeine in dosages over 200mg per serving).
Anyway, we’ve analyzed the most important ingredients for below – to show you how effective this pre-workout really is.

This is one of our favorite pre-workout ingredients – it’s proven to improve your strength and endurance.
But it’s part of a proprietary blend, meaning there might be a minimal amount inside and might not work.
This can improve muscular endurance, but it’s also shown to cause paresthesia – tingling on your face, chest, hands, fingertips and toes.
This is uncomfortable, and has cut our gym session short before.
Monkey Nutrition hasn’t done their research here. Betaine has shown to be ineffective in numerous studies, and even causes a side effect – fishy odors in your breath and sweat.
It’s also part of a proprietary blend, which increases the risk of you experiencing this side effect.
L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine are three branched chain amino acids – more commonly known as BCAAs.
This can improve muscle protein synthesis (muscle growth).
But here’s the problem – it’s cheap to buy separately, and isn’t really needed in a pre-workout – infact, it’s actually better to take BCAAs during your workout, not before.
This is one of our favorite ingredients to boost muscle pumps in the gym.
But it only works in dosages from 6,000mg. As it’s part of a proprietary blend, you don’t know the exact amount inside Koba.
Infact, it’s actually impossible for there to be enough inside here – the whole proprietary blend (called ‘N.O Nutrient Absorption Blend’) is only 4,550mg – so it won’t work for you.
This is important to increase blood flow and muscle pumps – but it’s ineffective when orally supplemented, as it has a poor absorption rate.
Citrulline converts to L-Arginine in your kidneys, which solves this problem – so Monkey Nutrition should’ve simply added an optimal dosage of Citrulline Malate in Koba (something they failed to do).
This is a great ingredient to improve focus and reduce fatigue.
But L-Tartrate isn’t the most effective form – the best version is Acetyl-L-Carnitine (studies have shown this be the most reliable form of L-Carnitine).
This can either make or break your gym session.
A correct dosage of Caffeine will improve your strength, endurance, and focus – but an over-dose will cause jitters and side effects.
So how much should you consume?
Answer: Between 150-200mg.
But here’s the problem – as Caffeine’s part of a proprietary blend, there’s a chance that there’s a large dose of it inside Koba.
This means you might suffer from energy crashes and jitters.
A key pre-workout ingredient to reduce fatigue and boost your focus in the gym.
You don’t need too much of this, for it to work – so as long as Monkey Nutrition has added in at least 50mg, this will work.
But it’s part of a proprietary blend…you know why this is bad by now.

Beta-Alanine is the only ingredient in Koba that’s almsot certain to cause a side effect called paresthesia.
But there’s the possibility of suffering from jitters and energy crashes if there’s a large dosage of Caffeine inside (which there might be, as it’s part of a large proprietary blend).
You’re at risk of suffering from these side effects:
- Paresthesia – tingling on the skin of your face, chest, hands, fingertips and toes (Beta-Alanine).
- Jitters (Caffeine dosages over 200mg per serving).
- Energy Crashes (Caffeine dosages over 200mg per serving).
Koba Review Conclusion
Monkey Nutrition seem like a fairly new supplements company – we hadn’t heard of them before this review anyway.
This isn’t always a bad thing, but they’ve shown their inexperience through this pre-workout – Koba contains numerous proprietary blends (which are one of the biggest gimmicks in the industry), as well as ineffective ingredients like Betaine.
The main bad point about Koba, is this: it might not work – no-one knows whether the ingredients have been dosed optimally, as they’re part of proprietary blends.
However, we know for certain that Citrulline Malate has been under-dosed, so you won’t be experiencing intense muscle pumps with this product.
Not only that, Monkey Nutrition charges customers up to £28 for delivery – this shows you that this company are only interested in making the most profit possible.
